Reference No . TN-STATAFRIC-AUC-339195-CS-INDV. Background Quality Monetary and Financial statistics are important for evidence-based policymaking, macroeconomic surveillance, financial stability monitoring, and the achievement of Africa's development aspirations. In the recent past, Africa has made good progress in improving the quality of Monetary and Financial statistics to support the formulation and implementation the sector’s policies and programs. However, many African countries continue to face challenges in producing monetary and financial statistics that are timely, comparable and aligned with international standards. Strengthening data availability and quality is important for monitoring progress in the financial sector and to support monetary integration agendas. The African Union Commission (AUC) has embarked on the development of continental Guidelines for Monetary and Financial Statistics. These guidelines will serve as a reference document for National Statistics Offices (NSOs), Central Banks, regional economic communities (RECs), and other data producers across the continent. The guidelines will align with and complement key international frameworks including the IMF Monetary and Financial Statistics Manual and Compilation Guide (MFSMCG 2016), the Government Finance Statistics Manual (GFSM 2014), and the System of National Accounts (SNA).
