Research on Electro - Thermal Energy Storage
Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority
Electro-thermal energy storage (ETES) systems convert electricity into heat and store it until used. Electric storage water heaters are the most common example of an ETES system. New ETES technologies have been developed and some of these could potentially supply a wide range of heat requirements, for example industrial steam or high temperature air, and internationally interest is growing in the role that ETES may have in enabling electricity to be an affordable source of process heat for businesses in place of, or alongside, other heat options. Other potential ETES benefits include enabling more efficient use of electricity networks or greater use of intermittent renewable electricity generation. We are seeking to procure research from qualified and experienced research providers. The research will produce evidence to help EECA understand and quantify the potential ETES opportunity for New Zealand’s businesses and energy systems. This evidence will inform possible future research, modelling and programme design. EECA will be holding a supplier briefing to provide an opportunity for supplier to ask questions relating to the requirements of the tender. A link to register for the supplier briefing will be published by addenda when it is available.

Fisheries New Zealand
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is seeking a research provider to conduct the annual Ross Sea Shelf Survey for both 2026/27 and 2027/28. The primary objective of this project is to conduct the Ross Sea shelf survey annually to continue monitoring trends in Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) recruitment in the southern Ross Sea. The objectives of the Ross Sea shelf survey are to: (i) continue monitoring trends in Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) recruitment in the southern Ross Sea (core strata A–C); (ii) continue monitoring trends in abundance of larger (large sub-adult and adult) toothfish and biological characteristics in two areas of importance to predators: McMurdo Sound and Terra Nova Bay in alternate years; and (iii) collect and analyse a wide range of data and samples from these areas (e.g., demersal fish, benthic invertebrates, stomach and tissue samples, acoustic data), which will contribute to the Research and Monitoring Plan for the Ross Sea region MPA. This project will include a field work aspect with the successful candidate required to be on a fishing industry vessel for approximately 4 weeks following the Ross Sea commercial fishery (from mid-late January) in both 2026/27 and 2027/28 seasons.
