Ontario’s electricity sector is undergoing a transformation, with major changes expected for both supply and demand. Driven by electrification, economic growth, evolving consumer roles, and decarbonization, electricity demand is forecast to increase by 75% by 2050. Simultaneously, the resource mix is expected to diversify to include more non-traditional resources like renewables, energy storage, and distributed energy resources (DERs). ​ ​To ensure the wholesale electricity market remains reliable, efficient, and competitive in the face of these changes, the IESO is proactively exploring deeper demand-side participation, market-based orchestration of non-traditional resources and participants, and other avenues that would allow for greater flexibility to manage operational challenges and uncertainty. To support this market evolution, the IESO is seeking qualified consultant(s) to provide, on an adhoc basis, expert analysis and technical advice regarding the design and enhancement of Ontario’s wholesale electricity market. This includes but is not limited to analysis of the associated tools and processes that support market efficiency, energy transition and the integration of non-traditional resources.
