SCC Spirit Store Container Replacement

The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a grade II* listed museum with a world class Natural History, Anthropology and Musical instrument collection. Items in the Horniman Collection when not on display are stored, managed, studied and conserved at the Study Collection Centre (SCC). The existing Spirit Store is a refrigerated container which holds generally organic and biological items which are preserved in vessels of flammable spirit such as denatured alcohol or formalin. The store requires replacement. The Horniman wishes to appoint a contractor to develop their Employer's Requirements into a design and deliver the works for a replacement Spirit Store. At SCC, the existing Spirit Store holds generally organic and biological items which are preserved in vessels of flammable spirit such as denatured alcohol or formalin. Due to the need for flashpoint temperature control and inherent fire risk, the Spirit Store is a secure refrigerated walk-in container which stands apart from the main storage building. The Spirit Store container is aged with general conditional, operational and plant performance limitations which give risk to safety and collection conservation risks.
