Multi-Use Outdoor Mobility Space
KidsAbility Centre for Child Development
KidsAbility is seeking an experienced design/build partner to create a new multi-use outdoor mobility, therapeutic and experiential space that extends opportunities for therapy, skill development and exploration beyond the walls of our centre. KidsAbility will enter into a contract with one entity. All trades and subtrades, architectural design etc should be included as one proposal. The vision is to create an inclusive and engaging outdoor environment where children and youth with diverse abilities can practise functional mobility, experience different physical and sensory environments, and participate in therapeutic activities outdoors. The space should provide an accessible foundation while also creating purposeful opportunities for children to encounter and navigate varied surfaces, terrain, grades, elevations and other conditions reflective of those they may experience within their everyday environments. KidsAbility also envisions the space supporting outdoor treatment and therapy, opportunities for rest and gathering, and sensory experiences thoughtfully integrated through landscape, materials, nature, texture, colour, sound, art and other environmental elements. This project is intentionally distinct from KidsAbility’s existing accessible playground. KidsAbility is not seeking traditional playground equipment or a conventional playground design. Rather, the new space should complement the existing playground by providing a different experience focused on functional mobility, therapeutic use, sensory exploration and meaningful participation. KidsAbility has intentionally defined this opportunity around desired experiences and outcomes rather than a prescribed list of features or design solutions. While there are important functional and accessibility requirements for the space, KidsAbility wants to leave room for proponents to bring their own expertise and creativity to the project.
