Future Fuels for New Zealand
Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority
As decarbonisation progresses into harder to abate sectors, new energy carriers may be required to replace existing fossil fuels. These fuels, such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrogen and green ammonia, may have multiple methods of production, requiring different feedstocks and process inputs, and be at differing levels of technological readiness and economic viability. By gaining a better knowledge of the current state and future outlook for these fuels, EECA will be better placed to inform and support the development, and or use, of those best suited to New Zealand’s energy system. To help gain the required knowledge, EECA wishes to commission research into future fuel options, their methods of manufacture, suitable applications, and scenarios offering a low/medium/high uptake for each, to quantify the amount of feedstock required. This will include more detail on more promising or more technologically ready options, and a watching brief on those that still require significant development before being suitable for NZ. This will form a knowledge base, which will be regularly updated to keep knowledge current. All the information can be found in the RFP document in the attachment section. Please submit your questions through the GETS.
